Compass Christian Centre June 2006

After another successful year of Staircase, with good attendances from the teenagers, it was decided to go back to Glenshee to the Compass Christian Centre for another overnight stay. We roped in the help of Fiona Mitchell from the Senior Sunday School due to the departure of our minister Neil Gardner.
We left Alyth at 12 midday for Glenshee on a beautiful sunny Saturday in June, and arrived in time for a picnic lunch with the Senior Sunday School. We were shown to our rooms and had a quick rundown of the rules and regulations, before it was off to get kitted out for gorge walking. We all had to get waterproof suits and welly-boots on, then off we went about 5 miles further up the Glen. We splashed and waded our way up the burn, climbed over rocks, splashing through deep pools until we reached a high pool which we were roped up into. We all had great fun especially coming back down, sliding into the deep pools. We were all soaked to the skin but everyone enjoyed the experience! It was then back to Compass, changed and the kids just ‘hung out’ as they say until tea-time. In the evening we went for a walk up the hill and through the heather to a large rock cairn. It was a lovely evening and a pleasant way to wind down. We returned to the centre for the ‘Thought for Life’ spot held in the meeting room by the staff. Supper, games room and quiz followed before falling into bed exhausted.
Up by the bell at 7.40am and breakfast at 8.30. We packed up and attended another ‘Thought for Life’ session at 9.30, more like a short service this time. Then it was off for kayaking. Kitted out again, kayaks at the ready, we all took to the wee loch. Some of us were a bit unsure to begin with, but we had great fun and played a game of ‘British Bulldog’ on the water, it was a good laugh!
Some of the group had to leave then and the remainder completed the Glenshee challenge – a set of puzzles and dilemmas for us to figure out. All too soon it was over and time to head back to Alyth, all the kids safely deposited home and if anything like myself, exhausted.       Ruth Jolly
